What is OLIEN?

OLIEN is a comprehensive educational rewards/incentives system that benefits children, parents, and teachers.

For children, OLIEN's motto is "Incentives for Learning". It gives children an incentive to practise their spellings and maths by rewarding their efforts. Even their weekly homework set by the teacher can be done on OLIEN and they will be rewarded for doing it!

For parents, OLIEN provides an easy way to monitor the performance of your child's spelling and math efforts via the Parent Portal. You will also be able to see if your child has completed their assigned homework tasks, and you can elect to receive a weekly analysis report which details your child's performance against the class average. The teacher may also provide weekly feedback of your child's effort & behaviour which you will be able to view through the portal.

For teachers, OLIEN allows you to set up weekly spelling lists, maths, and other tasks, that you can assign as homework. Once a student completes a task, the results are automatically marked for you and available to be viewed. You can even drill down into a students individual results to help you identify any potential learning difficulties a student may be having.

OLIEN comes in two flavours, a Student Portal you can use with your web browser (Internet Explorer, Opera, Google Chrome, etc.), or the advanced "Desktop Edition" application that you install on your computer.

The Student Portal and its rewards

The Student Portal is a website that allow's children to practise their spelling and math tasks, and complete any homework tasks that may have been assigned by their teacher.

A child earns one point every time they answer their spellings/maths correctly on their first attempt. If they need a second attempt, the will only score half a point. There are no points for a third or subsequent attempt. The points accumulate until they reach the target of a reward. They can then redeem the reward from their parent.

Parents set up and manage the rewards using the Parent Portal. Rewards can be anything the parent decides, for example it may be something as simple as a monetary value. When the target points (set by the parent) have been reached, the child will be notified they have earned their reward and it is ready to be redeemed from their parent.

The Student Portal is licensed by a yearly subscription which incurs a fee of $28.50 per year (some schools have special arrangements where this fee may be discounted or removed).

The advanced "Desktop Edition" with Parental Control

The OLIEN Desktop Edition is a Windows application that you install on your computer. It uses the latest technologies to apply a locking mechanism that contols the computer usage based on guidelines that you, as a parent, will set for your children. The computer can be locked out to your children while remaining 100% accessible to you.

The reward incentives for this system is to provide more free time for your children which they can use to play games, or surf the net.

Following, is a brief description of the parental controls that come with the "Desktop Edition" application:-

  • Free Time - the computer will be unlocked and available for "free time" to your child for a specific length of time each day, that you can set and control.
  • Bonus Free Time - your child can earn bonus free time if they practise educational tasks such as spelling or maths. Each time they spell a word correctly or answer a question correctly on their first attempt, they earn 10 seconds bonus time. If a second attempt is needed they earn 5 seconds, and for a third or subsequent attempt they will not earn any bonus time.
  • Lockdown - you can optionally set a time range for each day that you want the computer to be locked, even for free time. For example, you may want to use this so your children gets some time away from the computers during the day on weekends. During Lockdown, your child will not be allowed to do anything on the computer, including the educational tasks.
  • Educational Websites - you can specify websites that you deem to be educational. You child can use these anytime - except during Lockdown periods. You can be safe in the knowledge that the only websites they will be viewing are ones that you have allowed.
  • Parents can set a password that will allow them to unlock the computer when they want to use it, or if they want to give the child bonus time for good behavior, etc.
